Food Review: Hi Fan Tian (嗨飯天) At Sims Drive | Cheap & Delicious Egg Fried Rice By Ex-Din Tai Feng Chef In Aljunied

The Place Located at Blk 45 Sims Drive is Hi Fan Tian (嗨飯天), a newly opened stall in a coffeeshop which specialises in Din Tai Feng style fried rice. The humble stall is run by ex-Din Tai Feng chef, with a striking bright red signboard. The coffeeshop where Hi Fan Tian is located is right beside Sims Vista Market & Food Centre, and it can be challenging to get a table during peak hours as it is not huge. It is also within 5-10 minutes of walking distance from Aljunied MRT.

The Food There are various combinations of fried rice to choose from such as Mala Fried Rice, Sambal Fried Rice, Tom Yum Fried Rice or the classic Egg Fried Rice. Decide on the fried rice base first, then go on to choose what toppings you would like.

I went for the predictable Egg Fried Rice (S$4) as this is the most basic option, yet it is also my litmus test as to whether a fried rice is good. Fried to a nice texture where every grain of rice is firm, the basic egg fried rice did not disappoint. The rice is fragrant with a good balance of the egg flavour, and I think it is very close to Din Tai Feng’s version.

I also had the Egg Fried Rice with Chicken Cutlet (S$6.50), which comes with generous portions of sliced fried chicken.

Personally, the chicken cutlet is passable for me as I would prefer it to be crispier and the meat is a tad dry for me.

Do mix the fried rice with the chilli which is quite good!

For sides, I ordered a Spicy Pork Wantons (S$4.80) which is great for sharing. Unlike dumplings, these wantons are smaller, and the portion is quite generous too. Mildly spicy, where the texture of the wanton is just right for me.

Fried rice aside, there are also noodle options.

Rants Expect to wait up to 30-40 minutes during peak meal hours. Best to get a table first before you order.

Will I Return Again? Good and cheap Din Tai Feng style fried rice in the Sims Drive neighbourhood within walking distance from Aljunied MRT. I wouldn’t mind having it again, less the long waiting time.
