Food Review: Backstage Cafe | Off-the-beaten-track cafe in Kallang
The Place It seems that the more ulu a cafe is these days, the more popular it can be. Backstage Cafe is definitely not your usual cafe in town, as is one of those off the beaten tracks cafe located within Kallang Industrial area. I was surprised by how big and spacious the whole cafe is at first glance, which is a stark contrast to most cafes in town where I usually struggle to find a seat (let alone a cosy one) and often end up rubbing shoulders with strangers unintentionally. The high ceiling also makes me feel like I have all the space in the world.
The Food As with most cafes, I like to browse the coffee menu first and am glad to find out that the coffee beans are supplied by Papa Palheta, which is almost a quality guarantee. There is also brunch fares such as Smoked Salmon Benedict ($15) and Big Breakfast ($13), as well as mains to choose from such as Smoked Salmon Panini ($11) and Grilled Pork Chop ($18). I would say that the food selection is decent though it may not be as wide a range as other cafes offerings. It is also welcoming that the prices are quite reasonable.
We tried one of the specials of the day, which is not on the menu, the Roast Chicken ($13). I especially love the sauce, which goes well with the tender roasted chicken.
On the contrary, I find the Smoked Salmon Panini ($11) a normal fare. The smoked salmon is quite fresh and the serving of the fries is quite generous as well, but the Panini texture and taste can be improved on. It is not fragrant enough and the texture is a tad too tough.
Of course, we cannot do without our coffee on weekends. There were two specialty coffee blends on that day, the stronger Terra Firma and the Throwback which is more chocolatey.
For our Iced Mocha ($5.40), we opted for the Throwback blend, which is quite rich in the cocoa taste.
The Flat White ($4) is the Terra Firma blend, which I personally prefer more for its stronger acidity taste.
Rants We cannot help ranting that Backstage Cafe is closed on Sunday! That is like the most popular day for brunch in the week.
Will I return again? The location is the real charm at Backstage Cafe, not forgetting the ample space as well. It is difficult to find a quiet spot on weekends and this is definitely one cafe I will return.
