Food Review: Kitchen by Food Rebel | Healthy eating at Stanley Street in CBD [Closed]

The Place Located along Stanley Street in the CBD of Singapore, Kitchen by Food Rebel is a cafe bistro which specialises in health food. Opened since January this year, the owner Elika has a strong belief that healthy food does not equal salad or bland food, which is evident from the food menu here. The interior at Kitchen by Food Rebel is casual and can be quite packed during lunch hours, so come early if you are in the mood for something healthy.

The Food There is no particular type of cuisine which dominates the menu here, but rather it is a mix of Western and Asian influences.

The Buddha bowls are one of the signatures here, packed with a well-balanced mix of nutrients. There are also organic-based salads, super smoothies and sandwiches served on 100% Austrian wheat. Even the snacks here such as the cakes are guilt-free – gluten, dairy and sugar free. We were largely impressed that the ingredients for the dishes here are either organic, hormone-free, sustainable or locally sourced. Meals are prepared from scratch, including sauces and salad dressings, with no MSG or artificial preservatives.

We tried the Vegan Sweet Potato & Chickpea Bowl (S$19) with beetroot hummus, quinoa, tofu-avocado mix and Tahini dressing. This was surprisingly filling, and it felt like a superbowl of ingredients. The natural pink hue of the beetroot certainly added that visual appeal to the dish, while my favourite ingredient here is the tofu-avocado.

Can burgers really be healthy? We were sceptical about The Rebel Chicken Burger (S$21), but it turned out to be a rather decent healthier rendition of the usual burger. From the hormone-free homemade patty to the sweet potato fries, this is probably as healthy as you can get for a burger.

The Sustainable Barramundi with Asian Sesame Greens (S$21) uses locally sourced fish from a farm off the coast of Singapore, packed with loads of Omega-3.

Even the coffee here uses the natural sugar in Gula Melaka!

Rants How sustainable is a health diet daily? While it is all about balance ultimately, healthy food does come with a higher price tag as compared to a plate of chicken rice.

Will I Return Again? As the only organic café in CBD at the point of writing, Kitchen by Food Rebel has certainly positioned itself well in this increasingly packed health food market (think Aloha Poke and Grain Traders in the CBD surrounding vicinity). The prices are on the high side, but organic food doesn’t come cheap in any case. This is definitely one place to try if you are serious about eating well.

  1. The beet hummus looks delicious. Though I think the salad needs a bit more dressing 😉
