Food Review: Kuro Maguro at Tanjong Pagar Centre | Fresh Maguro to satisfy your Japanese fix in CBD

The Place The new Tanjong Pagar Centre building is fast becoming a Japanese food haven, with the likes of new concerts like Japan Rail Cafe and Kuro Maguro. Located on level one, Kuro Maguro which literally translate to Bluefin Tuna, is a sashimi and donburi concept by Misaki Megumi Suisan, a wholesaler of maguro and sashimi in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, managed by the same team behind MAGURO-DONYA MIURA-MISAKI-KOU SUSHI & DINING (MAGURO-DONYA)  located at Eat At Seven (read our review here) in Suntec City. On the space, the restaurant is relatively small with a mix of counter seats and tables.

The Food The main highlight for Kuro Maguro is undoubtedly the tuna. If you don’t fancy tuna, this restaurant is not for you. The team uses a Super frozen technique to ensure the freshness of the tuna from Misaki Port to Singapore.

We started with the Maguro 3-Cut Sashimi (S$38) which includes akami, chūtoro and otoro. My favourite is always the fatty otoro, though the akami does not pale much in comparison here as well.

For donburi, the Sansyoku Meshi (S$32.80) is one of the signature on the menu, which features the three types of maguro.

Alternatively, the Toro Aburi Meshi (S$32.80) was a surprising dish for us. We initially thought the flamed-seared technique here will ruin the freshness of the Maguro, but it was only lightly torched one surface. The overall flavour was a nice mix of flamed softness in the texture of the  maguro on one side and the crisp freshness on the other.

Taking place from 1 to 3 February 2017, Kuro Maguro’s Grand Opening Sale will entitle all customers to 50% off the delicious Otoro Meshi donburi. Limited to one bowl per person.

Rants The relatively small space is probably not ideal for large group meals here.

Will I Return Again? The freshness of the sashimi is the main drawing point for Kuro Maguro. With its accessible location and reasonable prices, this is a good option to satisfy your Japanese food craving especially if Maguro is one of your favourite sashimi.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
