The Place Opened about six months ago, I only found out about Solo Ristorante along Amoy Street recently. The Italian restaurant is right beside Kimme and diagonally opposite Restaurant Nouri, and it is a good thing all three restaurants offer very different cuisine. My first impression of Solo Ristorante is its cosy and somewhat homely vibes. There is a bar section which offered the best view of the chefs at work, and you can catch a clear glimpse of how each dish is prepared. The main dining area is an intimate size, elegant yet not too formal.
For groups more than ten, the private room space is ideal for celebratory occasions.
The Food Helmed by a new executive chef, there is a 4-course Signatures Set Menu (S$75++ per person), or you can go for the concise ala carte menu which has a varied mix of appetisers, pastas, meats and seafood, along with desserts.
I started with the Sicilian Style Octopus with White Eggplant Caponata (S$28), where the delicious octopus is grilled to a nice texture and is not too chewy. It is quite a decent portion for sharing between two people.
For pastas, I had the Orecchiette with Duck and Orange Ragout (S$28), which happened to also be one of my favourite dishes of the night. The orecchiette is very flavourful, cooked to an al dente texture. The flavours of the ragout is quite rich as well, which I enjoyed.
The other pasta I tried was the Penne Gorgonzola (S$25) with Sweet Blue Cheese, Walnut and Red Cabbage, one of the daily specials but I was told that this would soon be available on the ala carte menu as well. I was half expecting a strong blue cheese flavour but thankfully it is relatively mild. I do find it quite interesting to add blue cheese into pasta, and the walnut provides a nice crunch here.
For something to share, I tried the Whole 800g Seabass with Lemon Butter Sauce (S$50/Sharing for 2), a huge portion of fish off the coast of Italy. There is not much of the lemon butter sauce here, but nevertheless the fresh flavour of the seabass is evident. In terms of portion, this could very well feed three diners.
For dessert, it was a simple Homemade Apple Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream (S$12). The apple pie is filled with mascarpone, which is surprisingly quite light. Overall, it is not too sweet even when I had it with the vanilla ice cream.
Rants Amoy area has been packing with new restaurants opening, while we should not complain, parking has increasingly becoming an issue in the area.
Will I Return Again? I enjoyed my meal at Solo Ristorante. The setting is fine casual, while prices are relatively affordable for the ambience and quality of dishes it offer.
This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
