Food Review: Ah Seng Braised Duck Rice At Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre | One Of The Best Teochew Braised Duck Rice In Singapore

The Place This is one Braised Duck Rice stall which I have been visiting since young when the Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre was an old dilapidated hawker back in the 1990s being a poorer cousin to the ever-popular Chomp Chomp Food Centre just across the roundabout. The hawker centre underwent a major renovation in the early 2000s, and continued to enjoy minor upgrading works since, now spotting a very airy and clean look. There are a couple of hawker stall here which you will spot a snaking queue everyday, and Ah Seng Braised Duck Rice is definitely one of them apart from Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle. Originally from the now-defunct Lim Tua Tow Market, the stall specialises in Teochew Braised Duck and has another stall at Serangoon Central as well.

The Food As mentioned, Ah Seng serves Teochew-styled Braised Duck, so you should expect the sauce to be light and watery, unlike the luscious sauce we see in Hokkien-style Braised Duck. The subtle herbs flavour in the sauce makes it perfect to go with plain rice, which I will typically drench it completely with the sauce.

For a one person duck rice portion, this will only set you back at S$3.50, although I will always add a Braised Egg (S$0.50) and Braised Beancurd (S$0.60) to complete the meal. Best thing is that you can skip the queue at Ah Seng by calling them for a pre-order and arriving on time to collect your ready packed meal selections. And yes, you can pay them easily via e-payment through their SGQR code, making contactless purchase a reality here at Ah Seng Braised Duck Rice.

I ordered a Half Duck (S$26) for take-away as well, which the stall will pack the braised sauce for you too. I had this for dinner, and the meats remains tender and tasty. One important thing for a delicious braised duck is that the duck skin has to be well-seasoned and retain its chewy and fatty texture for a wholesome bite. In these aspects, Ah Seng definitely does well.

Rants The queue for Ah Seng is always long, so you do need to be patient. The pre-order only works if you are doing takeaways, otherwise it is always best to have it fresh at the hawker centre.

Will I Return Again? I have been patronising the stall for decades by now, and cannot imagine why I will stop visiting Ah Seng Braised Duck Rice.
