Food Review: Barood At Tras Street | Modern Japanese-Indian Dining Bar In Tanjong Pagar

The Place I love my dining experience previously at Revolver restaurant and Barood is a newly opened modern izakaya dining bar concept by the same team behind Revolver and the Michelin-starred Hamamoto. Tucked away on the second floor of Revolver’s shophouse, the interior of Barood is inspired by the rich Moorish influences of 1960s Paris along with intimate lighting.

The dining shophouse space is not huge, and there are pockets of cosy corners perfect for couples or small groups.

The Food There is a spirit collection of over 200 labels, with a focus on single malts, tequilas and mezcals. The food menu is bar bites centric, where you can expect Japanese twists in the Indian tapas dishes.

I started with the Bombay Uni Toast (S$28), a bite-size tapas with tamarind and bread pakora. The flavour of the spices are quite rich, which mask the taste of the Uni itself.

The Butter Chicken Paratini (S$22) is one of the more substantial dishes on the menu and is also my favourite. You get mini paratha stuffed with butter chicken and tomato espuma, where the paratha spots a crispy texture and goes really well with the rich butter chicken.

The Koliwada Prawn Tempura (S$26) is a distinct Japanese tapas on the menu where the tiger prawns are polished with yuzu aioli and curry leaves.

Other dishes I tried were the Malabar Sloppy Joe (S$22) – pulled pork, spiced shallots and pao; and Mini Duck Rice Cakes (S$20) – pulled duck, paniyaram and tomato chutney.

Rants Portions are relatively small for the price.

Will I Return Again? I love the hidden restaurant and bar concept tucked away on level two of a shophouse away from the hustle and bustle of Tanjong Pagar. The ambience is sophisticated and elegant, and injecting that bit of Izakaya and Japanese elements into the Indian dishes is an interesting take on bar grubs. That said, I do find the portions quite small in general.
