Food Review: FYR Cycene Ond Drinc at Telok Ayer | Revamped menu with hits and misses
The Place Located along Boon Tat Street, FYR Cycene Ond Drinc (FYR) has recently revamped its entire menu after being opened for about six months. The restaurant spots a rustic look, which makes the ambience casual and chill-lax. Other than serving a wide range of options on the food menu, the drinks menu also has an extensive wine and cocktail offerings. We won’t deny that we were left unimpressed after our first visit some time back, so our expectations were kept really low this time, but we decided to give it another shot at the new a la carte menu. Who knows it might just be better?
The Food The small plates section spots new items such as the Blue Mussels, With mix herbs, wasabi, laksa leaves ($15) and Chilean Sea Bass, With Proscuitto, squid, local fruits salsa ($18). FYR differentiates its Europrean cuisine by injecting South-East Asian spices, evident in the laska leaves for the mussels and the local fruits salsa on the sea bass.
My favourite dishes of the night were the Braised Beef Short Ribs, With Rendang Glaze ($42) and DeRaza Iberico Pork Chop 280g ($36). Both dishes were very tender and full of flavorful burst of juice, especially the pork.
For a good platter to share, the Whole Maine Lobster, Five Spice Whole Chicken & Lamb Saddle ($88) is a good mix of seafood and meat, though I thought it will be perfect if there is beef instead of lamb. The grilled lobster was fresh and both the chicken and lamb were well-seasoned and grilled from the Josper Charcoal Oven.
With high expectation comes disappointment. It was a pity that we were not too impressed with the Cape Bryon 100 Day Grass-Fed Angus Tomahawk 1kg ($108). The Tomahawk beef leaned towards the dry end of the spectrum and was a tad too tough to stomach as well.
For desserts, I will say go for the Valrhona Triple Chocolate Mousse, With Balinese black sea salt, peanut caramel ($12) over the Grilled Lady Finger Banana & Coconut Ice Cream, With almond caramel, filo pastry, cinnamon ($10).
Rants Pricey. We get the centralised location, and high staff cost, but a 3 course meal plus a drink here will easily set you back by more than $75 per pax.
Will I Return Again? Telok Ayer has many dining options, and to choose to return, the restaurant has to strike the right chords with their diners. FYR offers some of these, but leave you feeling devoid of many more. The meats here are a tad too dry, probably due to the charcoal oven, and the high price point does raise one’s expectation.
