The Place Located right beside Yuhua Village Market & Food Centre, Zai Shun Curry Fish Head is a popular stall within a coffeeshop which got featured on the Michelin’s Bib Gourmand list in the past two years. It only operates from morning till early afternoon, and the stall serves predominantly porridge and a wide variety of local Zi Char style dishes.
The Food I went for a meal with a big group of foodies, hence we managed to try a good mix of dishes. Contrary to popular belief or my own initial perception from the stall’s name, the curry fish head is not the best signature dish here.
The Steamed Red Garoupa is definitely a dish which is good for sharing. I like the fresh flavour of the fish, along with the black sauce it is soaked in.
An alternative to the Red Garoupa is the Steamed Long Dan in Fermented Beancurd & Pork Lard Sauce. This is a much more unique option in terms of the sauce, which is very tasty on its own. Moreover, who can resist pork lard sauce? Add it to your porridge and it is perfect.
I am never a fan of bittergourd and hence I am surprised that I enjoyed the Bittergourd with Eggs. A simple plate of greens, I do wish that the egg portion is more here.
Other dishes worth ordering are the Braised Duck and Dong Po Rou. The former is tender and flavourful along with the dark sauce which the duck is simmered in, while the Dong Po Rou comes in distinct layer of lean and fat meat. Go for the latter if you can only afford one meats dish.
Other side dishes we had were the Har Bee Hiam, Stewed Lily Buds and Prawn Roll.
Rants Despite the big coffeeshop, it can be a struggle looking for a table here. Get here early. And yes, parking can be a problem.
Will I Return Again? We paid S$146 for eight dishes, including two orders of fish dishes. Prices are very reasonable and flavours on point, Zai Shun is a comforting option in the West for sure. We will be back.
