Food Review: Syohachi Yakiniku At Guoco Tower | Wagyu Beef Yakiniku Buffet At Tanjong Pagar

The Place Located at Tanjong Pagar, Syohachi Yakiniku is a new Japanese Yakiniku restaurant from Hong Kong. Focusing on buffet sets, the restaurant has tiered pricing for its premium 2-hours Japanese A5 Wagyu Buffet starting from S$70++ per pax for the early birds, to S$80++ during peak dinner hours between 7pm to 11pm. For Friday, Saturday and eve of Public Holidays, there will be a surcharge of S$8++ per diner too.

Simple decor, with air ducts to ensure diners do not “smell like grilled meats” when they leave the restaurant, though I am not sure if that’s working well. Just make sure you are not heading anywhere important after the meal here.

The Food The highlight here is definitely the A5 Wagyu cuts from the award-winning Hidakami Ranch located at Miyagi Prefecture. If you are on a budget constraint, you can opt for the more affordable Yakiniku Ala-carte Buffet here, serving as much as S$20 from the premium buffet option. Do note that there is a time limit of 2 hours for all buffet dinners here, with the last order at the 90 minutes mark.

Naturally, I went with the A5 Wagyu Buffet option since I cannot fathom not having wagyu cuts for yakiniku. You can order unlimited set of the 5 Wagyu Cuts, which include the chuck, round, brisket, knuckle and diced bite-sized beef. Note that you will not be able to order specific cuts as Syohachi Yakiniku typically orders a whole cow, and will like to ensure the freshness of their meats by having diners enjoy the various parts of the beef.

Needless to say, the chuck is my favourite cut with its intense marbling. On the contrary, I find the diced beef a tad too tough for my liking.

Other than beef, you can find other meats here too, and ordered portions of the Chicken Thigh with Fresh Italian Basils, and Thick Slices of Pork Belly with Yuzu Zest and Peppers. Both are frankly quite satisfying, though beef still does the best for me when it comes to grilling.

For seafood, the Scallop with Herb Butter Sauce and the Japanese Oyster with Herb Butter Sauce are the 2 recommended items on the menu. The scallops are quite enjoyable, grilled it over the fire and drain the water away before pouring the herb butter sauce over for further grilling. Enjoy the scallop when the sauce starts boiling!

You can choose from a wide selection of other sides, including vegetables, miso soup, appertisers and even sushi! Though you might want to skip the sushi, since it is not their specialty.

Recommending the cucumber with sesame sauce and kimchi, which aids in clearing the palate between grills.

Another tip, make sure you order the freshly sliced pineapples and put it on the grills! The end result is a slightly charred pineapple with intense zest! Highly recommend you to give this a try.

Rants It was slightly smoky during my visit, from other dining tables. It would be a better experience if the ventilation is better.

Will I Return Again? For diners with a hearty appetite, Syohachi is the place to go for a good yakiniku buffet in Singapore.

This was an invited tasting, though all opinions expressed are our own.
