Food Review: Chuan Kee Boneless Braised Duck (全記鸭饭) at Ghim Moh Market & Food Centre | Is this Michelin Bib Gourmand Stall the Best Braised Duck Rice in Singapore?

The Place The Rantee loves a good plate of braised duck rice, hence we are subconsciously on the hunt for the best in Singapore. Despite staying far from the west, we made our way to Ghim Moh Market & Food Centre one fine weekend for Chuan Kee Boneless Braised Duck, which has been around in the food centre for more than a decade. The popular stall in the hawker centre near Holland Village is also listed on the Michelin Bib Gourmand 2018 list for the first time, and without any surprise, we were greeted with a long queue even though we arrived slightly after 10am (the stall opens at 10am). While the queue looks daunting, it moves fairly quickly and within 30 minutes, our orders were served.

The Food The duck rice starts from S$3 here, and you can opt to add on other side ingredients like egg, braised tofu (Tau Kwa) and braised beancurd skin (Tau Ki). I had a platter of duck meat, along with egg, braised tofu and beancurd skin for two people, which costs S$12.50. The price is very reasonable in my opinion. The first thing I did is to dive straight into the duck meat, and it was oh-so-heavenly. The braised duck meat is very flavourful and beyond tender, where the secret dark sauce plays a big part in the flavour.

One thing which I also like is that the duck meat is all deboned at Chuan Kee, which some people would not prefer on the contrary.

The sauce here leans towards the sweeter end, as opposed to the saltier flavour profile from another famous braised duck stall in Serangoon Gardens Food Centre, Ah Seng Braised Duck. The Rantee preferred the latter’s sauce, while I am a strong supporter of Chuan Kee.

For rice, go for the fragrant yam rice, which is such a delight to have along with the dark sauce.

Rants We struggle to find a rant for Chuan Kee.

Will I Return Again? A resounding yes, even if it means travelling half way across the country to get here. The sauce and tender duck meat are enough reasons for me to return. Chuan Kee Boneless Braised Duck is easily one of the best braised duck rice in Singapore for me.
